A Week in the Life of a Technology Design Coach

We are almost halfway through the school year and my new role as a Technology Design Coach is as rewarding as it is challenging. Learning so many new things and understanding the different campus cultures is like a fast flowing winding river.

Here is a glimpse into my work this previous week!

Ms. Ballard demonstrates her use of Canvas

On Monday, Diane Wells and I shadowed our colleague Lauren Fox at Anderson High School to get a teacher perspective on the Canvas Learning Management System. AISD's new BLEND system will mimic Canvas.
Tuesday was all about early voting at Andrews Elementary School!  Ms. Powell, the librarian, organized everything as a real election! Students entered the library with their "registration cards" ready, checked-in with 5th-grade volunteers and proceeded to a voting booth.

Class visits were on the agenda for Wednesday.  Mr. Flores at Andrews Elementary School demonstrates how his 1st grade students are more than comfortable using iPads.

STEM Conference | Lure of the Labyrinth

Have you ever wondered how to integrate literacy and mathematics?

AISD's vision and core beliefs involve the infusion of Literacy, Technology, and the Whole Child.  As a technology design coach my focus is on implementing transformative technology into instruction and curriculum.

As a former math teacher, I began to think about integrating literacy, numeracy and technology.  The online program designed by MIT students called the Lure of Labyrinth does this in a very authentic manner!

In Lure of the Labyrinth students enter a graphic novel to look for their lost pet among a city of monsters.  Students must solve a series of math puzzles to earn tokens to free their pet and other's pets.

Group play is allowed and within a group students can communicate with each other in a message board to solve the puzzles.  The puzzles do not have many directions but involve foundational skills to solve, like ratio and proportion.

For teachers, there are videos and instructions to help you get started, lesson plans, puzzle graphic organizers and the ability to view student group communication!  It's really too much for me to type all of it here!

Check it out at https://labyrinth.thinkport.org.  Also take a look at my presentation from the Austin Area STEM Conference the first week of August!

Cohort I Professional Learning

July 12th marked our first Cohort I Professional Learning!  Teachers were very excited and little anxious about their role and expectations.

We began our day with circle time to get to know everyone and then proceeded to outline the role of a Cohort I Teacher and they will interact with their Campus Innovation Coach and District Technology Design Coach.

Cohort I Teachers also dived into the Technology Integration Matrix and learned how to reflect on their practices then set a goal for the upcoming school year.

We participated in an EdCamp to build personal learning networks and had sandbox time for teachers to play with all the new tools they explored.

I am really excited to get started with my Cohort I teachers this year!
