STEM Conference | Lure of the Labyrinth

Have you ever wondered how to integrate literacy and mathematics?

AISD's vision and core beliefs involve the infusion of Literacy, Technology, and the Whole Child.  As a technology design coach my focus is on implementing transformative technology into instruction and curriculum.

As a former math teacher, I began to think about integrating literacy, numeracy and technology.  The online program designed by MIT students called the Lure of Labyrinth does this in a very authentic manner!

In Lure of the Labyrinth students enter a graphic novel to look for their lost pet among a city of monsters.  Students must solve a series of math puzzles to earn tokens to free their pet and other's pets.

Group play is allowed and within a group students can communicate with each other in a message board to solve the puzzles.  The puzzles do not have many directions but involve foundational skills to solve, like ratio and proportion.

For teachers, there are videos and instructions to help you get started, lesson plans, puzzle graphic organizers and the ability to view student group communication!  It's really too much for me to type all of it here!

Check it out at https://labyrinth.thinkport.org.  Also take a look at my presentation from the Austin Area STEM Conference the first week of August!
